01. 紅包

red envelope (with money inside)

"紅包"翻譯爲red envelope較爲恰當。envelope是"信封"的意思，現在的紅包就是一個信封的模樣。如果怕老外不太明白，可以加上with money inside，翻譯爲red envelope with money inside就可以了。現在微信上流行搶紅包，可以翻譯爲snatch red envelopes，其中snatch是"搶"，Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary對snatch的解釋是to take hold of something suddenly and roughly，suddenly和roughly很能體現在微信羣中搶紅包的那種奮不顧身和喜悅*_*。

【例】I got some red envelopes. I've been watching a Chinese New Year special (on a Chinese programme) and I'm having noodles for breakfast!

02. 春晚

Spring Festival Gala/New Year Gala

其中，gala是"綜藝演出"的意思。把春晚說成是一個party是不準確的`，gala是很好的翻譯。和春節相關的東西，可以用Spring Festival作定語，也可以用New Year（大寫）作定語，但有些外國人不知道什麼是Spring Festival，這個要注意一下。說到春晚，一般都是指央視春晚，有些地方翻譯成the CCTV Spring Festival Gala，個人認爲這樣不太好，因爲CCTV在英語中代表closed-circuit television，也即閉路電視。也就是說，CCTV在英語爲母語的人看來，第一反應很可能是閉路電視，這樣容易產生誤解。此外，用CCTV的全稱China Central Television也不太好，因爲外國人很可能也不太知道China Central Television到底是什麼，而翻譯爲Chinese state television's Spring Festival Gala就比較好，因爲在這裏state指"國家的"，足以體現出中央電視臺在中國的地位。

03. 雞年/屬雞

先說雞年。中國屬相中的"雞"是比較難翻譯的屬相，因爲不知道中國人葫蘆裏賣的到底是什麼雞*_*。英文中的“雞”很多，我們一起來學習一下：

chicken 雞；雞肉。這是一個籠統的說法，無論公雞母雞都可以叫chicken，但chicken還有懦夫或怯懦的意思。此外chicken還指雞肉，肯德基叫KFC，就是Kentucky Fried Chicken。

chick 小雞；雛雞。這個詞和chicken同源，指孵化出來不久的小雞仔，但chick還有小妞的意思，並且說這個詞的時候帶有對女性的不尊重。

hen 母雞。hen和cock/rooster（公雞）對應。

cock 公雞。在英國英語中，cock指公雞，這個意思美國英語叫rooster。但是，cock還指男性的重要部位*_*，是不能隨便用的，rooster沒有這個意思。

綜上，爲了體現雄壯、勇敢、充滿希望等意思，雞年的“雞”翻譯爲rooster較爲恰當。

所以，"你屬什麼？"可以這樣翻譯：Which sign of the Chinese zodiac were you born under?

"我屬雞。"就是：I was born under Rooster according to the Chinese zodiac.

【例】She was born under Gemini.

04. 年夜飯

New Year's Eve dinner

用dinner肯定沒錯，但也可用banquet和feast來替換dinner，它們都是"盛宴"的意思，更能體現年夜飯的高大上~。

05. 包餃子

順便說一下，有些地區包餃子的時候還會放硬幣，據說咬到的人就會交好運，這種餃子就可以說成dumplings with lucky coins inside，可以和上面的red envelope with money inside一起記。

【例】There's traditional food too - noodle soup is supposed to bring luck, and people make dumplings with lucky coins inside.

06. 敬酒

要注意這個短語和to的搭配，如"我給岳父敬酒了。"就是：

I drank a toast to my father-in-law.

Spring Festival couplet

其中couplet是"對句"的意思，通常指兩行長度一樣並且押韻的詩句。所以，a Spring Festival couplet是指"一副對聯"，如果指多副，就要用複數couplets。

10. 團圓

reunion

reunion可以看作由re和union組成，這樣可以方便記憶。以下例句提到了包餃子象徵團圓，請注意，這個例句說的是in parts of China——中國一部分地區過年吃餃子，其實我的家鄉貴州過年從來不吃餃子！*_*

【例】Every year millions of people travel home to be with their families for the holiday. In parts of China, families make dumplings to symbolise luck and reunion.

11. 拜年

give one's New Year blessing to/pay a New Year visit to

“拜年”其實有兩個意思，一個是把雙手託在胸前說"給您拜年了！"，這句話可以說成：

I would like to give my New Year blessing to you. 或 Please accept my New Year blessing.

以上的blessing通常用單數，Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary對blessing的解釋是good wishes。

另一個"拜年"是過年期間去別人家送禮做客。如"我明天要去爺爺奶奶家拜年。"就可以翻譯爲：

I'll be paying a New Year visit to my grandparents tomorrow.

12. 廟會

temple fair

temple是"廟"，fair是"集市"。以下例句說的是北京地壇廟會，我去過，不過人太多了……
