　　2000年，國務院正式批覆中國記協《關於確定“記者節”具體日期的請示》，同意將中國記協的成立日11月8日定爲記者節。記者節像護士節、教師節一樣，是我國僅有的.三個行業性節日之一。按照國務院的規定，記者節是一個不放假的工作節日。

　　新中國成立前就有記者節。從1933年到1949年，每年的9月1日，新聞從業人員都舉行各種儀式紀念這一節日。

　　1949年12月23日，中華人民共和國政務院頒佈的《全國年節及紀念日放假辦法》中明確規定了“記者節”，《辦法》對年節和紀念日放假規定這樣表述：“其他各種紀念節日如：二七紀念、五卅紀念、七七抗戰紀念、八一五抗戰勝利紀念、九一八紀念、護士節、教師節、記者節等，均不必放假。”但因爲當時沒有確定具體日期，因此長期以來中國新聞從業人員一直未過記者節。 1999年9月18日頒佈的《 全國年節及紀念日放假辦法》，再一次明確列入了記者節。2000年8月，國務院正式批覆中國記協的請示，同意將11月8日定爲記者節。

　　11月8日也是中國記協的成立日。1937年11月8日，以範長江爲首的左翼新聞工作者在上海成立中國青年記者協會，這是中國記協的前身。
